Humalog Mix 25 by Eli Lilly is a peptide hormone produced in the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. It has a multifaceted effect on the metabolism in almost all tissues. The main action of insulin is to lower the concentration of glucose in the blood.

Humalog Mix contains a mixture of insulin Lispro (25%) and insulin Lispro Protamine (75%).

• Insulin is a hormone that lowers the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin lispro is a fast-acting insulin.
• Insulin Lispro-Protamine is an intermediate-acting insulin.

This combination insulin begins to act 10 to 20 minutes after injection, peaks at 2 hours, and continues to act up to 24 hours.

Do not use Humalog Mix in the form of injections under the skin. if you are allergic to insulin or have an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Effects of taking Humalog Mix 25

Insulin increases the permeability of plasma membranes for glucose, activates the key enzymes of glycolysis, stimulates the formation of glycogen from glucose in the liver and muscles, and enhances the synthesis of fats and proteins.

Metabolic effects of insulin:

• increased absorption of glucose and other substances by cells;
• stimulation of glycolysis enzymes;
• increased glycogen production;
• decrease in the intensity of gluconeogenesis (decrease in the formation of glucose in the liver from other organic compounds - energy sources, such as amino acids).

Anabolic actions of insulin:

• improved uptake of amino acids by cells;
• improved transport of potassium, magnesium and phosphate ions;
• improved protein synthesis;
• increased production of fatty acids.

Anti-catabolic actions of insulin:

• reduction of protein degradation;
• decreased intake of fatty acids in the blood.

Medical indications for taking Humalog Mix 25

Treatment of diabetes mellitus in patients requiring insulin to maintain normal glucose homeostasis.

Application and dosage of Humalog Mix 25

The dose should be determined by the doctor depending on the need.

Side effects

When using insulin preparations, the possibility of the following adverse reactions should be considered:

• low blood glucose levels (severe hypoglycemia);
• hypoglycemic coma;
• itching at the injection site;
• allergic reactions to insulin (up to anaphylactic shock);
• decrease in the production of own insulin (occurs only with long courses using very large doses).

What other drugs will affect Humalog Mix 25

The need for insulin may increase when taking drugs with hyperglycemic activity, such as oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, thyroid hormone preparations, danazol, beta2-agonists (such as ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline).

Insulin requirements may be reduced in the presence of drugs that have hypoglycemic activity, such as oral hypoglycemic agents, salicylates (eg, acetylsalicylic acid), sulfonamides, certain antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors, selective B inhibitors (captopril, enalapril), angiotensin II receptor antagonists, beta blockers, octreotide or alcohol.

The use of Humalog Mix 25 mixed with other insulins has not been studied.

Before taking other drugs in combination with Humalog Mix 25, you should consult your doctor.

Storage of unopened (not used) Humalog Mix:

• refrigerate and use before expiration date;
• store at room temperature and use vial within 28 days or injection pen within 10 days.

Storage of open (during use) Humalog Mix:

• store the vial in the refrigerator or at room temperature and use within 28 days;
• store the pen at room temperature (do not refrigerate) and use within 10 days. Do not store a pen with a needle attached.

Humalog Mix should look cloudy. Do not use the medicine if it looks clear or has particles in it. Call your pharmacist for a new medicine.

Do not freeze insulin or store it near the cooling element in the refrigerator. Throw away any insulin that has been frozen.
