Finasteride by Accord is a generic drug that is mainly used to reduce an enlarged prostate. However, when taken in a 1 mg dose, finasteride is also used to treat male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia.
Hair loss is a fairly common problem that many men face, especially as they age. However, if you are concerned, treatments such as finasteride may help.
note: This treatment can only be given to men.
Effects of taking Finasteride
- reduces the level of a certain hormone that causes hair loss in men;
- effective results in 90% of men;
- take one per day for 3-6 months;
- stops hair from thinning;
- easy to take pills.
Finasteride at a dose of 1 mg is more effective in the early stages of hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and much less effective when alopecia has already formed. Androgenetic alopecia in men aged 18–60 years usually responds well to treatment, with maximum hair growth usually achieved after four months to 2 years. Remember that treatment should be continued because if treatment is stopped, hair growth will stop within 6 to 12 months.
How does Finasteride work?
Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase thereby preventing the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Dihydrotestosterone is an androgenic hormone that helps speed up the hair growth cycle and “deplete” hair follicles. This, in turn, leads to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride slows or even stops this process.
Application and dosage of Finasteride
One 1 mg tablet per day, regardless of food intake. Some studies show that some men need a dosage of 0.5 mg or less to achieve the same results but with a reduced likelihood of side effects.
